AFTER SCHOOL
MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
Semester-long intervention program for challenging students who are at-risk of expulsion or dropping out of high school.

SailFuture’s after school mentorship program provides tutoring, mentorship, and a supportive community to help at-risk teens achieve their high school diploma.

OVERVIEW
Youth in this program are disengaged teenagers that have lost respect for the “traditional path.” The average GPA is a 0.6 and many youth are on the verge of expulsion of dropping out of high school.

Since the program began in 2013, SailFuture has served more than 150 at-risk high school students. 95% of our students have earned their high school diploma and/or remained enrolled in school.

Students and mentors meet twice per week for 16-weeks. After completion of the program high school students are eligible to be hired on as sailing instructors or continue as volunteers until they graduate from high school.
Our success is rooted in an innovative curriculum that blends near-age mentorship, academic interventions, and sailing to create an environment that builds students’ self-worth and provides tools for academic growth.

NEAR AGE MENTORSHIP

We recruit driven, passionate and relatable college students to become mentors for every one of our students.
SailFuture mentors are near-age 18-23 years old who have demonstrated a passion and commitment to help their younger peers reach their same level of academic and professional success. We provide mentors with basic training and utilize sailing as a tool to help the pair build trust, respect, and friendship on the water and in the classroom.

ACADEMIC INTERVENTION

We work to inspire and empower our students to take control over their own education, and see it’s importance to their future.
The after school program is split into two parts: a tutoring period and a sailing period. Before students ever step foot on the boats, they review their academic progress with their mentor, troubleshoot poor test grades, complete homework, and work ahead on major projects. Our mentors provide direct, 1:1 tutoring, coaching, emotional support, and accountability to help each student regain control over their education.

SAILING

Sailing teaches responsibility, inspires confidence and builds a foundation of lifelong friendships.
Sailing is the basis of everything we do. Through it, we teach responsibility, inspire confidence and build the foundation of lifelong friendships. It allows us to achieve an equal playing field between college and high school students, and it is an exciting and different way to engage a population that typically wouldn’t participate in a ‘self-help’ program.
